    Dill Weed

    0
I got introduced to dill weed when I started to eat roasted potatoes.  So when I add something new to my diet,  I try to do some research on what I’m consuming.  Since I knew nothing about dill weed other than it made my potatoes taste good, I became pleasantly surprised to find the health benefits dill weed brought to my dish!

    Key Benefits

Nutrient Rich – As most spices I use they tend to be high in nutrients and dill weed is as well.  Dill weed is dense in Vitamin A, B6, Manganese, Potassium, Flavonoids, and Vitamin C.  It is also important to remember that the amount of spice you use per serving is very low, so in order to see a lot of the benefits of these spices you would have to consume a hearty amount.  DillWeed - Spice

Fresh Breath – Dill contains germicidal and antibacterial properties that help to disinfect your mouth. So consuming dill can help ‘clean up’ your mouth.

Antioxidant – From the high concentrate of Vitamin C, dill weed is a good source of antioxidants for a herb.

Helps with Digestion – Dill has excellent digestive properties that helps flush your system. An added bonus dill can help with diarrhea.   Two of the main causes for diarrhea are bacterial infections and indigestion issues.  While dill is high on flavonoids and monoterpenes which help fight digestion problems as well as bacterial infections.

Reduces Menstrual Cramps – Pretty much for the same reasons as dill is good for you digestion, it helps with your cramps. A flavonoids contained in dill are known as emmenagogue.  These help to maintain the health of the hormones involved with a women’s menstrual cycle.

Helps with Depression – Again with the flavonoids, they have attributes that give a calming effect.  So for us living in the North where we don’t see the sun too much during winter, maybe try adding a little dill to your diet to help with seasonal depression?  Worst case your breath gets better!

    Conclusion

I enjoy the flavor profile of dill, the Mediterranean flavoring always warms me up and helps me enjoy my meal just a little more.  I don’t go heavy with dill in my meals, but a 1/4 of a teaspoon here and there always does the trick in raising the taste profile of whatever I’m using it on… usually potatoes.

    Doing Something For You

    0

One of my favorite topics, and something I enjoy learning about is the fitness world. Being able to mold your body into something better than it was interest me. It is one of the few things in this world, were hard work pays off, and you can’t cheat the process. If you work at it your body changes, you can’t just talk the talk, you have to put the work in.

One of the guys who has had a lot success in the fitness arena is Mike O’Hearn, and through one of my rabbit holes of trying to absorb as much information I can from successful people (this case in the fitness industry) I came across him. It could have been through his love of Huskies or the fact it has been said he has the perfect body.Joshua Greene

When someone asked him why he workouts out at 4am every morning, his answer surprised me. I had assumed it was for something more basic like there was nobody at the gym. But there was more to it. He works out first thing in the morning because he believes you should do something for yourself every day to start your day.

He goes on and explains that all day no matter who you are, a CEO, supervisor, parent, kid doesn’t matter you are always at service to others . By working out first thing, he does one selfish act for himself. To help him grow… in his case his arms. But the same idea can be applied to everyone’s walk in life.

If working out isn’t your thing, it could be reading a book, could be listening to a podcast, even meditate. The idea I think Mike was trying to represent, was do one thing, first thing in the morning that can help you grow as a person, for yourself.   You then have the rest of the day to help and do work for others.

GymPak DumbellSince then I’ve done just that. The one thing I do is the same as Mike, is workout, to me that sets the stage for the rest of the day. The gym has now become “my bar after work” I use to blow off steam and relax at the local watering hole.

Now it’s the gym. So for me working out first thing, gets my mind right for the day, and puts me in a better place, to help serve others. I’ve found since I’ve changed my workouts to the AM I’m in a better place. You can easily replace the gym with anything else that sets you up for a good day. Like I said before maybe it is 20 minutes of meditation, or ready a chapter of a good book. Whatever it is doing it for you is what matters.

What are some of the things you would like to do for yourself, daily?  Do you do them?  What is holding you back?  Have any questions for me?  Please send me a message or start a discussion below.  Someone like you is think the same thing, however they are waiting on YOU to start the discussion.

    Potatoes

    0
The potato is a wonderful vegetable (yes it is a vegetable) a lot of goodness comes from it, such as vodka,  french fries, potato chips, and nutrients!  One of those things is over looked a lot because its not like the others!  Nutrients are good for you obviously, but the potato gets a bad rap for some of the uses!

The reason for the bad rap is most Americans over consume their potatoes and prepare them in a way that makes them unhealthy, such as frying them,  adding a stick of butter, ranch,  sour cream and/or removing the skin. A potato that is cleaned, and baked, steamed or boiled is good for you.  As you are keeping it close as possible to the natural state the potato comes.

My preferred choice of potato is baked.  Now I hear that sweet potatoes are better for you, and typically the potatoes that have color (sweet, purple majesty, etc) are higher in antioxidants.  For me it is a taste thing.  But I will learn to enjoy colorful potatoes (one day)!

    Key Benefits of Potatoes

(the profile of benefits will be different per type of potato)

Nutrient Rich – Potatoes are high in Vitamin A, C, B6, K, potassium, manganese fiber, and antioxidants. The potatoes with colors are especially rich in antioxidants.  Most of the nutrients are found in the skin.

Helps the Belly – Sweet potatoes have a higher concentration of fiber and antioxidants that help with digestive system.  Boil Potatoes

Helps your eyes – Eating one sweet potato a day gives you well over your needed beta-carotene.  Beta carotene is converted into vitamin A, which we know is good for your eyes.  So if a doctor tells you, you are deficient in Vitamin A… I’d start looking at the sweet potato to incorporate into my diet.

    Potatoes & Starch

While there are some myths going around that soaking potatoes in water helps eliminates the starch and lowers the carbohydrates.  I’m not sure if that is  the case.  But as you can see from my cooking videos I do soak my potatoes overnight.  I can tell you I do see a white film come off the potato and I’m assuming that is starch.  Yams

I soak them so they last longer in the fridge, and not because I think it lowers the carb / starch count.  Food that is higher in starch typically means they are high on the glycemic index. If you are not sure what that means, it means it will temporary raise your blood sugar level, and you will process the carbohydrates faster.  Making you hungry sooner then a carbohydrate lower on the glycemic index.

Now all starches are not created equal.  Potatoes contain a resistant starch.  This starch only passes through are large intestine.   This helps with your gut health, and there have been studies linking resistance starch to help with with blood sugar and insulin

    Conclusion

I enjoy potatoes and have been adding them to my diet and replacing some of my rice meals with them.  I’ve seen no weight gain, or any negatives towards my body.  I do feel a bit fuller for longer so it has helped me eliminate some cravings in between meals.
