    Antioxidants
In a lot of the spices I’ve written about antioxidants comes up as one of the key benefits of the spice.  But what is an antioxidant exactly? What exactly does antioxidants do for the body?  What spices have I found that are high in antioxidants?

    What is an Antioxidant?

The best way I’ve found to define antioxidants is by saying “they help prevent cell damage, or at least prolong the damage to cells”.  You consume antioxidants through many different food sources as well as spices.

    What does an Antioxidant do?

After you consumed an antioxidant it travels through your bloodstream into your cells and helps to remove free radicals from your bloodstream.  Free radicals are bad!  They attached themselves to your cells and that is what causes damage to the cells.

So antioxidants help eliminate free radicals from attaching to your cells therefore eliminating cell damage to your body.   Free radicals enter your body in multitude of ways such as, stress, smoking, drinking alcohol, bad diet, suntanning, infections, toxins, etc.

    Spices with Antioxidants

    • Red Pepper Flakes
    • Thyme
    • Oregano
    • Basil
    • Cinnamon
Since we hate on the potato so much, I’ll mention that the potato is also a good source of antioxidants.

    Conclusion

Since you can’t get antioxidants straight up, you get it from sources like Vitamin C, E, A, and food there is no recommended amounts I could find, it is more or less get your recommended dosages of vitamins and nutrients that contain antioxidants properties and you’ll be good.

    Anti-Inflammation

    Anti-Inflammatory
In a lot of the spices I’ve written about anti-inflammation comes up as one of the key benefits of the spice.  But what exactly is inflammation? What does an anti-inflammatory do?

    Definition

InflamedThe simplest definition of inflammation I could find  is “localized reaction that produces  redness, warmth, swelling, and pain as a result of [an] infection, irritation or injury” according to MedicineNet.   So if an area of your body hurts, it is probably inflamed!

    What Does an Anti-Inflammatory Do?

An anti-inflammatory is a source that helps to eliminate the reaction of pain or discomfort you are feeling.  Most anti-inflammatories come in pill form such an Advil. Tylenol, or Ibuprofen pills.  These pills are considered NSAIDs.  While yes you can get NSAIDs in prescription base as well as over-the-counter, I prefer to try to get them through a food source versus pill form.  Inflamed

Pills can be hard on your liver and other vital organs, and the more you use these NSAIDs the more your body becomes used to them, and the more you have to take feel the effects.

Some great sources of Anti-Inflammatories in spices that I have found so far are:
    • Parsley
    • Oregano
    • Basil
    • Cinnamon
    • Turmeric (probably the best spice for Anti-Inflammation I’ve found so far)
Now an Anti-Inflammatory does to the body is help eliminated the inflamed area.  It does this by blocking certain body chemicals that would cause the inflammation.  This will then reduce the redness, warmth, swelling, and pain in the areas that are inflamed.

    Red Pepper

Looking for a good spice to heat up your dishes?  But won’t overpower the flavor what you are cooking the spice in?  Look no further that red pepper flakes.  When I cook my meals for the week, I usually always have one dish that has red pepper in there, and I usually double the recommended amount. Red Pepper

It gives a nice kick while at the same time you don’t’ have to worry about burning your mouth while consuming it.  Some spices that kick up the heat of the dish, you taste it and then you can’t taste anything else since all that spice did was temporary impair your taste buds.

While I can go on about how much I enjoy the taste of red pepper, the spice does have some great health benefits to it as well.  So not only does it make your food taste better it helps your body as well.

    Key Benefits

Helps with Ulcers and Tummy Aches – While this probably surprises a lot you, since we have been taught that hot spice upsets the stomach opposed to soothing it. That isn’t the case with red pepper.  Red pepper contains capsaicin, which helps to stimulate gastric mucosal blood flow which helps calms the stomach aches and ulcers.  While most heat spices stimulate the acid secretions that upset your stomach, red pepper doesn’t.  Red Pepper - Crushed

Helps With Your Weight – Research has shown that the heat from red peppers helps to stimulate your metabolism.  By stimulating your metabolism is helps your body prevent fat from sticking.

Booster of the Immune System – Red pepper contains Vitamin A, a nutrient that helps keep your immune system healthy and functioning like it should.

    Conclusion

Not bad for a spice that you thought only made your food spicer. What are your thoughts on red pepper?  Do you have any great recipes that use red pepper? if so please share.  Have any questions for me?  Please send me a message or start a discussion below.  Someone like you is think the same thing, however they are waiting on YOU to start the discussion.
