Mindset: The New Psychology of Success
One of my friends, Nick recommended a book to me a few months ago which was “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success” by Carol Dweck.  Now me being a cheap charlie, I try to rent books from the library instead of purchasing them.  I do however will purchase a book after borrowing it from the library if I plan on re-reading it.   I do wish we could share audio books like we could hard copies.  But I digress.

What this book discusses is there are really only two types on mindsets, fixed and growth.  It goes over practical examples of how each mindset will achieve different results, and how to adapt and change your mindset to a growth mindset.  A fix mindset is a mindset that you believe life “is what it is” that you can’t get smarter, you have limits on your abilities, and so on.  While a growth mindset is a mindset were you can adapt, learn, adjust and improve your abilities.  Pretty much that your abilities are not limited, like a fix mindset would have you believe.

The book also goes into details on to train yourself to change your mindset, how to teach and instill a growth mindset in kids.  This book is your playbook on how to adjust your mindset.  Well worth the listen (or read if that is your thing).    Have you read any good books lately?  Comment below with some good books we should check out, or connect with me on social media.

    Saving Energy Like Jim Brown

    Jim Brown
    Jim Brown
Love him or hate it, you cannot deny Brown was a once in a generation running back.  Myself I am not a fan of Jim Brown simply for what he did off the field in how he treated women.  Not a fan.  But what I have noticed about Brown was what he did between plays to save energy.   It had me looking at my own day to day and seeing some similarities.

In May one of my best friends turned 37 and as well do every couple years we talk about how we feel and how we felt when we hit the big birthday years, like 30.  Jon and I were talking and I said Jon I still feel like I’m in my 20’s minus the body aches, I still think I can go on burning the candle at both ends.  But I’m a bit worried about 40.

Jon cut me off there and was like Josh you’ve always had a ton of energy  ever since I’ve meet you.  You also were doing something when in High School and beyond.  His comments caught me off guard.  As they say “you can’t see the forest from the trees”   So I took a step back and reflected over the years what my days, weeks, months and years looked like.

For the most part he was very much correct I was always doing something and had a lot of energy to out last everyone I knew.  I’m very hard on myself, so I tend to focus on the times when I have nothing going on, I feel guilty about it.  This is where the Jim Brown method came in (Not sure if that is an actual method…yet).

After Jim ran the ball and the play was dead, when he was going back to the huddle, he would look like he was out of gas, and could not possible run another play.  Maybe it was to psych out the defense.  But soon as the ball was snap and he got the ball he would be as explosive as ever.  But when he didn’t need to use energy he didn’t.   And that was what I focused on, not the times where I could do a 24 hour day of work without a problem, or get up at 4 work to 7pm and then be out with my friends until midnight every day of the week.

Lately I remember the times I used little energy while I was home with nothing on the calendar, not in a hurry to do anything.  But when calendar got booked up I had no problem doing everything being everywhere, or what not.  And as I look back at it, I’m confident that I was able to manage my energy levels to make sure I could always do and be where I was needed.  (for the most part)

    How To Press Tofu

A question I get often is how I get rid of the excess water that tofu is packaged in.  You can see it in their face that they are hoping for some magical tool I’ve found on Amazon.  But truth be told I use household items to press my tofu.  By not using a tofu presser I’ve found out that I save a lot of time and effort.  Most non-commercial pressers only press on brick at a time.  And who has time for that?

If you batch cook like I do, one tofu brick at a time does nothing for me, a typical prep day for me I need 4-6 bricks of Tofu.  (I go through a good amount of tofu every week).  The items that I use to press my tofu are:
    • Cloth Towels (I’d prefer Tea Towels if I had them).  I don’t use paper towels as they are not reusable, and I try to limit my carbon footprint where I can
    • Two Dinner Plates – Same Size (more depending on how many bricks I’m pressing)
    • Cast Iron Skillets (I use 3)

    Process

After I drain the tofu from the water in the package, I wrap each brick individually and place on a dinner plate.  Once each brick is wrapped I place a dinner plate upside down over the wrapped tofu.  Then place the skillets on top.  I use the dinner plates to keep the integrity of the tofu as it comes without damaging or misshaping the tofu.

After a hour or two (depending on the weather, conditions etc) I remove the skillets and flip the dinner plates.  Then apply the skillets again.  Depending on how wet the tofu still is I may re-wrap the tofu and repeat the process.  Normally that isn’t needed.   But depending on how high moisture is and the weather it might be needed.

Boom your tofu is ready to prep.
