    Being Active Helps The Mind

    Being Active
    Being Active
For a few years, I was at a pretty low spot in my life, you wouldn’t have known it when you saw me out.  But that was the thing, I hardly left my condo.   I was pretty much was a hermit.  I wasn’t working out, I wasn’t spending much time doing work, I was pretty much coasting through life.   And the more I stayed home, the harder it became to leave.

At one point I had stopped all together going to the gym, and days I would typically go down the bars that I owned, I would come up with excuses to stay home.  Then finally I had enough of being like this.  I wasn’t depressed, sad, or scared.  I don’t know what I was, I just didn’t feel like doing anything.  TV and naps were all the rage to me.   But like I said that changed.   I was slowly getting my groove back, I stopped making my life to easy to allow excuses to win.  For instance I wouldn’t go to the gym close to my home, I would force myself to drive to one, shower there, and once I left the condo, I didn’t come back to dark.  The simple change of  driving to a gym, seem small, but it got me to leave this comfort zone of going back to my condo, and doing nothing.

However this would ware me down, I was going from one extreme to the next, but as I talked about in a blog about small changes,  I would do this a few times a week, then my body and mind would be exhausted, and I would have to relapse.  Now it has been a few years since this low light happen, and I’m still working back to my old active self where I would be doing something 5 to 7 days a week.  Some days I still crash hard, but never two in a row anymore (well hardly two).    You have to understand I was used to working a million hours a week, so by where i said I was doing nothing,  I was still probably putting in 40+ hours a week, but I was able to do that from the comfort of my home.

What this all has to do with being active and helping the mind, to me when I was more active, I was less likely to talk myself out of being active.  Once I left the condo, my old rationale left with me, slow and steady I was able to build up more and more energy to be more and more active.    Don’t get me wrong there are days and hours I still hermit myself to my condo, but the full days are maybe  twice a month (if that), and hours I’m not productive are not as many as you would think.

I do find myself being more creative, and finding solutions to problems I have when I checkout I’m not running a million miles, so I do find benefit sometimes of being still.  However the trick is not being still for too long or I can feel myself sliding back to being a full time hermit.  I guess you could say that is when I go dark, but I’m now able to find a way back to the light.

Did Antonio Brown Play The NFL?

    NFL
    AB
If you follow sports at all you have seen over the past year the saga of AB.  You have watched this play out and like me you had to be thinking, what is this dude thinking?  He’s giving up playing for what appears to be a solid organization in the Steelers.  Gets traded to Oakland, gets a new contract with the ability to make a ton of cash.  Next he is in the spotlight for everything but his game.

His feet, then his helmet, next the fines, then the recording of a phone call illegally, and then demanding to be released publicly.  And I almost forget getting into a verbal altercation with the GM.

But after that is all said and done, he some how ends up with the New England Patriots, with a 9 million dollar signing bonus and could make I believe another 6 million dollars from the rest of his one year contract with them.  Where he now has the chance to compete for another Superbowl Ring.

So was this dumb luck that got him there, from all his off-field antics, or was this construed once he wanted out of Pittsburgh?  From what I see in professional sports, nothing surprises me anymore, and I think us fans get duped all the time.  I could be naive in thinking that there are some really smart people out there, that can organize something like this, while making us think what the media tell us.

Like in the government, I like to think we have smart elected officials running our country, and what we see and hear from the media is just a small glimpse of what our officials know, and the information they have is far more intense than what we get.   So if that is true, why couldn’t a 31 year old professional football player who appears to have a work ethic second to none could not get all these pieces to fall together to make this happen?  His agent, Drew Rosenhaus seems like a very intelligent man who knows the inner-workings of the NFL  and could help facilitate something like this too.

But did Brown play the NFL?  If he can make it through one season at a Patriot and not get cut from the antics he pulled in Oakland and Pittsburgh, then I think so.  However if that is truly who AB is, from what we saw this past month then his talent made this happen in New England, and that makes me wonder what the Steeler’s Organization put up with for all those years, and kept it pretty quite.

    Small Changes Equal Big Successes

    Small Changes Equal Big Successes
Over the years I have learned that looking at the big picture while exciting can be overwhelming trying to get there.  We look at certain goals we have and then we see all the work that has to go into it, and now we feel defeated before we begin looking at all the work we have to do to get there.   To me that is a loser mindset, and yes I have done it, but as we learn in life we should learn how to overcome poor attitudes like that and figure out ways to achieve our goals.

For me, I see what it takes to achieve the task or goal, and then I begin to break it down, into smaller goals and tasks.  This helps me feel a sense of accomplishment while working towards the bigger picture, keeps me focused, and helps me build momentum.  Here are some examples of how I’ve been doing this.

Right now I’m finishing up my first book.  I think I’ve written close to 100,000 words for it so far (I’m sure a lot will be cut) but when I first started I made an outline of each chapter, and then inside the chapter, I made another outline of what I wanted to talk about inside that chapter.  And what I would do to get each chapter done, is I would start writing about each section one section at a time,  I had set forth a goal of writing 1,000 a week, but that wasn’t the best of plans since I could never get momentum creatively going, so I made the goal of 4,000 words a month (same amount of wordings per week per say) but I would write the 4,000 in one week and make notes for the rest of the month for next month, and the juices of creativity flew!

Another example is when it comes to this 700-page book I’m reading for CE (Continue Education).  I am not a reader.  But what I did was break it down by chapter and page count.  Let’s say the goal is to get 5 chapters done in a week.  So it would be one chapter a day (weekends was for the workbook).  So I would look at each chapter and see how many pages I had to read for that day.  I would then break that down into manageable portions I could do in one sitting.  It started as little as five pages at a time.  So if a chapter was 30 pages, and I knew my tolerance for that day was five pages at a time, I would make 6 times a day to read 5 pages.

Our goal I had was to wake up before 4 am each day.  This was when I was waking up between 7 and 8.  So what I did was start setting my alarm back 8 minutes at a time.  Once I was getting up at least 5 out of the 7 days a week with the alarm, I would then go back 8 more minutes.  Until I got to 4 am.  I have a new goal is 3:30 and I’m currently at 3:43 am.  And I’m hoping to be there by August.
