    Warm Lemon Water

In late August I found a YouTube Channel Simnett Nutrition and he discussed the benefits of drinking warm lemon water to start his day on an empty stomach.  He used it to detoxify his system and help balance out his body’s pH Levels.  And that spoke right to me.  I drink a lot of coffee and I try to balance out the coffee with Alkaline water but I didn’t think it was enough.  I’m a firm believer if you start your day right you are more likely to seize the day. So I thought why not give it a go, I was told also it was a nice alternative to coffee a more natural energy booster so to me this sounded perfect (it did not give me energy).

My system does feel less toxic and I believe is a nice balance to the coffee I consume.  But if you add Matcha to your warm lemon water there is a natural source of energy and that does work for a pick me up.

    Key Benefits

Drinking a warm lemon water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach is a great way to start your day off right.  Some of the key benefits of doing so are:Warm Lemon Water The lemon water acts as a detoxify agent by flushing toxins from your system. While this is happening a happy side effect is that is repairs your digestive system.  It helps build a happy healthy system.  And because it is helpful with removing toxins, it helps keep you regular. Lemon water for those who like good dental hygiene, helps there too.  Lemon water helps with toothaches, gingivitis and fights inflammation of your tonsils (if you still have them).  (1) For all you gym goes trying to shed a few pounds, lemon water helps there too.  Lemon water can help boost your metabolism to help you with weight loss, keeps you hydrated with it’s natural electrolytes.  It also helps with your joints and muscle.  My recipe for lemon water is below.  For an added punch I add turmeric and cinnamon.  And days I’m on the struggle bus…. Being Able to Argue

One of my biggest challenges when interacting with friends, employees, partners and so on, is the art of arguing. Arguing has such a negative appeal, that most of us stay away from it. Afraid to have those hard discussions, take the arguing personally, and afraid of what might happen to disagree with someone.

how to argueOne of my friends who I’ve known for the better part of a decade, we have never been able to argue with each other. We always bring up hurtful stabs at each other that have nothing to do with the discussion aka “the argument” and we end up not talking for long periods of times. Yet when we are face-to-face we have zero interactions about that are hurtful towards each other.

The thing is, we will always as human never 100% agree with one person all the time. We all have different perspectives on life, and on how things should be done. The key to maintain a successful relationship is not attacking someone’s character, but discuss what actions have been done to cause the problem. And the key for the one who is being told this is not to take it as a personal attack on them. Think about it this way, if someone who you didn’t care for much upset you, would you even take the time to talk to him or her about this? Or would you just carry on? So the fact that someone brings this matter to you, means they care for you and they are trying to improve their relationship with you. (Or they can just be a dick but I digress) but for the sake of this post I’m assuming their problem(s) is genuine and they want to see growth in their relationship with you.

As humans we are always making mistakes, the human is not a perfect creature, we make mistakes, we do the wrong things, we say the wrong things, and we mess up. So when this happens it not always about being right, or justifying your actions. It’s about understanding how your actions affect others, and working together for improvement.   These principles apply to debates on politics, policies, and so on. You have to be open minded when talking to others, and can’t be certain about anything that is not factual, and aren’t most facts just perspectives? “Certainty is closing of the mind” when you are 100% certain of anything you no longer listen, and folks who are close minded can’t be reasoned with. Which is a shame, because close minded people are usually extreme in their ways and beliefs.   These folks you are better off just walking away from instead of engaging since they will not listen, and more than likely if you don’t agree with them, they will probably end up hating you for your oppositions to them. So keep away from a lose/lose scenario like this.

    Tofu

Since I traveled back home from out west this April tofu has been a staple in my diet.  As I try to eat a more vegan / plant based diet, tofu has been a good source of protein for me.  When I had started converting my diet to a vegan diet, I was afraid of soy products (that is how I got introduced to Almond Milk).

The old tale is “Soy increases your estrogen levels” Pan Seared TofuBut professionals and non-professional who are smarter than me help ease my worries and explained the interworking of soy and estrogen, and soon after tofu has become a staple in my fridge and in my day-to-day diet.

The nice thing about tofu that a lot of people don’t understand is you can easily manipulate the taste profile and taste to just about whatever you want it to taste and feel like.  It absorbs spices very well.  Tofu can be baked, grilled, fried, pan seared, boiled, grilled, and any other way you can think of, you probably can prepare it that way.

Another nice thing wirh preparing meals you don’t have to marinate tofu as long as you normally have to marinate animal meats such as chicken and fish.  The absorption rate is much faster in my experiences preparing tofu.

    Key Benefits

Nutrients – tofu is a good source of magnesium, copper, zinc, vitamin B1, iron calcium selenium, and contains nine of 20 essential amino acids (1)

Lower Risk of Cancer – there had been some studies done showing that eating soy based products have reduced the risk of cancer.  One study shows women who regularly had soy in their diet regularly (once a week) in their adolescence and adulthood showed a 24% lower risk of breast cancer vs those who didn’t.Tofu Steaks

Two reviews show men having higher amounts of soy especially from tofu had a 32-51% lower risk of developing prostate cancer.  If you think about it by having tofu you are reducing your risk by half!  While those men who are afraid of try tofu because it is not manly could have a 50% higher risk of getting prostate cancer because of their ego!

Diabetes Shield – Another benefit of tofu (soy) is it can reduce your blood sugar levels and insulin levels.  In one study post menopausal women who had 100mg of soy isoflavones per day lowered the blood sugar by 23% and insulin by 15%

Other benefits of tofu and consuming soy based proteins are bone health, brain function, reducing hot flashes, reducing wrinkles, and my favorite (after reducing the chance of prostate cancer) weight loss.

    Soy + Estrogen

As I alluded to earlier the myth that soy produces estrogen and increases your estrogen level.  While yes technically it can increase your estrogen level, but it is not bad thing.   Let’s get technically on how soy works in the body.

Soy contains a phytoestrogen (an estrogen occurring naturally in legumes, considered beneficial in some diets) which produce isoflavones, and these mimic the hormone estrogen.  However these isoflavones are weaker than the ones your body naturally produces.  So if you body produces enough estrogen these isoflavones from soy will not increase your levels of estrogen.  But if you body doesn’t produce enough estrogen naturally these isoflavones will increase your levels to what your body needs.  So guys you are not going to get man boobs from having tofu!   (2)

The tofu I typical purchase is House Foods.   Firm Tofu OrganicI get the firm, organic  red packing one, because that is what Costco sells. I prefer extra firm but you cant beat the price.  The macros are for a 85 gram serving size 70 calories 4 grams of fat, 2 grams of carbohydrates and 7 grams of protein  (my serving size is 70-75 grams).

I would also suggest getting organic tofu vs non. I’m not a big organic person, I’m more look for natural products.  But when it comes to the process and growing conditions of tofu, I prefer mine to be organic.  Maybe one day I will write a post on how tofu is made!
